Worship Ministry

At St. Matthew’s Cathedral, service is an expression of worship. Our ministries reflect a shared commitment to offer our time, talents, and hearts to the glory of God and the life of our community. Whether behind the scenes or at the altar, every role is sacred — and there’s a place for you.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is a quiet yet vital ministry of reverence and preparation. This volunteer team cares for the sacred vessels, vestments, linens, and altar furnishings used in worship. Members prepare the altar for all services — from Sunday Eucharist to baptisms, weddings, funerals, and weekday liturgies.

If you are detail-oriented, spiritually grounded, and drawn to the contemplative beauty of liturgical preparation, we would love to welcome you to this ministry.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs) assist the clergy during Holy Communion by offering the consecrated bread or wine to the congregation. This ministry requires a deep faith, a spirit of devotion, and a willingness to serve with humility and care.

Requirements:

  • Age 16 or older

  • Member of St. Matthew’s Cathedral

  • Licensed through the Episcopal Church

LEMs are invited to embody grace and presence at the altar, sharing in the sacred work of nourishing God’s people.

Servers

Liturgical Servers play an essential role in our worship, helping to create an environment of beauty, order, and sacred symbolism.

Serving roles include:

  • Crucifers – carry the processional cross

  • Torch Bearers – carry candles in procession

  • Thurifers – offer incense

  • Acolytes – assist the clergy at the altar

No prior experience is necessary. This is a meaningful way to live into your baptismal call and participate in the flow and rhythm of our shared liturgy.

Lectors

Lectors proclaim the Word of God during worship. This sacred duty involves more than simply reading — it is about sharing faith through Scripture and helping the congregation encounter God’s living Word.

We encourage thoughtful preparation and welcome anyone with a clear voice and a heart for Scripture to serve as a lector.

Greeters

The Greeters and Ushers Ministry offers the gift of hospitality at every service. Greeters welcome parishioners and visitors, answer questions, and help all feel at home in our worship space.

Ushers assist during the service by:

  • Distributing bulletins

  • Helping people find seats

  • Passing the offering plates

  • Assisting in case of emergencies

This is a wonderful role for anyone with a warm smile and a heart for service.

Audio / Video Operator

Our Audio/Video Team ensures that the Word and worship reach beyond our walls through high-quality live broadcasts and recordings. This ministry includes managing microphones, cameras, and the soundboard during services.

If you’re tech-savvy and interested in serving behind the scenes, we invite you to support this essential ministry.

Hospitality

The Hospitality Ministry helps create sacred moments of fellowship after worship. Volunteers provide coffee, refreshments, and warm conversation during our post-service gatherings.

This ministry offers a simple yet powerful way to extend the grace of the table and strengthen our church family.
